CVS Raises Community Awareness of Sexual Violence During Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Throughout the month of April, which is designated National Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), CVS organizes a number of community events in an effort to raise public awareness of sexual violence. Activities include:

CVS began its Denim in 2004 to enlist public support in dispelling harmful attitudes about rape. People were asked to break the dress code by wearing jeans to work and help "break the silence" about sexual violence. Denim Day began in 1999 as a protest following a decision by the Italian High Court to overturn a rape conviction because the victim was wearing jeans. The unpopular verdict became an international symbol of myth-based injustice for sexual assault victims.

CVS hosts an annual breakfast ceremony wherein the community partners both CVS and the survivors it serves honors outstanding community partners from local law enforcement, medical services, outstanding funders, etc.

Clothesline Projects workshops are ongoing during March and April.

The Clothesline Project is a powerful art display in which men, women, and children create a T-shirt depicting their own personal experience of violence. The shirts are exhibited at a number of venues throughout Contra Costa and Marin Counties.

The Poster and Essay Contest - Students from local middle and high schools are invited to write an essay or poem, or create a poster or collage, in regard to the theme of sexual violence.

Take Back the Night - A march and rally held annually to honor survivors of sexual assault and celebrate the right to live free of violence. Each year's event includes presentations from community leaders and a resource fair.

CVS’ Fundraising Gala – CVS hosts an annual evening of celebration of survivors with an evening of good wine, great food, local music, and a lively auction to raise needed funds for on-going client services.

CVS interactive Web Site for Teens
Thanks to a technology grant from SBC, Community Violence Solutions developed a web site directed toward the interests of teens with important information on issues such as sexual violence, harassment, healthy relationships, personal safety, date rape, and date rape drugs.
