Veralene Garrett Memorial Scholarship

To honor and celebrate the incredible contribution and impact Veralene made in her 25 years of service, the Community Violence Solutions Board of Directors has established the Veralene Garrett Memorial Scholarship. The $2,500 annual scholarship will be awarded each year to a college student pursuing a degree in the social sciences and planning to work in a profession focused on public service and helping people in crisis.

Sexual Assault and Human Trafficking by the Numbers

Every 74 seconds, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted. Every nine minutes, that someone is a child.

423,020 people age 12+ are estimated to experience sexual violence each year in the
U.S.

93% of victims under 18 know their abuser.

As of 1998, an estimated 17.7 million American women had been victims of rape or attempted rape.

34% of child sexual abuse victims are under age 12.

Females ages 16-19 are 4X more likely than the general population to be victims of rape,
attempted rape, or sexual assault.

In 2024, the National Human Trafficking Hotline identified 1,733 cases in California, involving 3,603 victims or survivors. 73% of those cases were either sex, or sex and labor, trafficking. 2attempted rape, or sexual assault.

Rape & Sexual Assault

According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, one in five women and one in seven men will be a victim of sexual assault in their lifetime.

Child Abuse

According to the National Children's Alliance, 4 to 7 children die evey day from child abuse or neglect in the U.S. and every 10 seconds a report of child abuse is made to child protective service agencies.

Stalking

Persons aged 18-24 years experience the highest rate of stalking. One in 6 women and one in 19 men in the United States have experienced stalking during their lifetime.

Human Trafficking

According to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, 1 in 6 endangered runaways reported to them were likely sex trafficking victims.

What We Do

Community Violence Solutions (CVS) is dedicated to working in partnership with the community to end sexual assault and family violence through prevention, crisis services, and treatment. Formerly called Rape Crisis Center, CVS was founded by the Greater Richmond Interfaith Program in 1974 and incorporated as a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization in 1977.

Since then, CVS has expanded its services to all of Contra Costa and Marin Counties. Community Violence Solutions is a non-profit agency that relies on your financial donations and that depends on the efforts of dozens of community volunteers.

Rape Crisis Center

Community Violence Solutions’ Rape Crisis Center responds to nearly 2000 requests for help each year.  Staff and trained volunteers are on call to provide support both by phone and in-person, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
