Board of Directors Job Description Expand

The Board of Directors is responsible for fiduciary and administrative oversight of all CVS programs and services. Board responsibilities include review and approval of agency fiscal reports, personnel actions, hiring and evaluation of the Executive Director, approve policies for the agency, fund development and long-range planning. The Board of Directors is staffed by the Executive Director of the agency who serves as a non-voting member.

The Board of Directors functions as a whole and with a committee structure. The current standing committees of the Board are: Executive and Finance. All other committees are formed on an ad hoc basis to address specific functions such as personnel decisions or fundraising activities.

The Board of Directors meets monthly, generally on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Meetings are generally held from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., with time for dinner. One or more daylong planning retreats are scheduled yearly.

SPECIFIC EXPECTATIONS OF BOARD MEMBERS INCLUDE:

  • Commitment to the philosophy of the agency;
  • Demonstrated commitment to feminism (empowerment, decision making);
  • Commitment to diversity in Board membership, staffing and agency services;
  • Serve at least one 2-year term as Director
  • Attendance at all Board meetings unless excused (2 hrs/mth.);
  • Active membership in at least one Board committee/project (2 hrs/mth.);
  • Commitment to assist in agency fund development (10-12 hrs/yr.);
  • Active support of CVS programs/services;
  • Willingness to serve as promoters/ambassadors of the agency in the community at large;
  • Willingness to participate in all or part of volunteer orientation training;
  • An annual contribution as well as participation in fundraising events, and cultivation of relationships and contacts of prospective donors.
